HOUSING

  • The housing deficit in Mexico is determined considering three main concepts: houses built with precarious materials, overcrowded homes, and homes with installations deterioration
  • Considering the analysis performed by the SHF, the extended housing deficit in 2016 was 9.2 million of homes, which represents 28.0% of the total homes in Mexico (32.9 million as of 2016)
  • According to CONAVI, the homes without housing deficit in Mexico has increased from 44.5% (1990) to 72.0% (2016)

  • ​Creation of homes will benefit from the formal employment growth, which means that most of the housing demand could be attented with mortgages, in addition to the increased purchasing power given by the formal income
  • Population aging, marriages and divorces, and migration are related to housing starts
  • The housing demand in Mexico is related with the housing starts, according to CONAVI, about 50% of the new households estimated to be created could be demanding new housing units
